Jan Antonín Altmann byl malířem z významné dačické umělecké rodiny, která se po několik generací podílela na výzdobě místních i vídeňských staveb a interiérů. Jeho syn, Jan Antonín Altmann II., rovněž pokračoval v malířské tradici. Vedle umělecké tvorby zastával Altmann starší i různé funkce v městské radě.

Je mu připisováno autorství několika významných děl, například dvou obrazů na procesní praporce v kostele sv. Vavřince v Dačicích, obrazu sv. Vavřince v kapli stejného zasvěcení v obci Hříšice či portrétů manželů Šantrůčkových z Dačic, které jsou dnes součástí sbírek Městského muzea a galerie Dačice.

Altmannova tvorba byla úzce spjata s církevním a městským prostředím jeho rodného kraje, kde zanechal výraznou stopu jako malíř i občan.

Jan Antonín Altmann war ein Maler aus einer bedeutenden Künstlerfamilie aus Dačice, die sich, seit mehreren Generationen mit der Dekoration lokaler und Wiener Gebäude und Innenräume beschäftigte. Auch sein Sohn Jan Antonín Altmann II. führte die Malertradition fort. Neben seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit bekleidete Altmann sen. verschiedene Ämter im Stadtrat.

Ihm werden mehrere bedeutende Werke zugeschrieben, darunter zwei Gemälde auf dem Prozessionsbanner in der St.-Laurentius-Kirche in Dačice, ein Gemälde des St. Laurentius in der gleichnamigen Kapelle im Dorf Hříšice und Porträts der Familie Šantrůček aus Dačice, die heute Teil der Sammlungen des Stadtmuseums und der Galerie Dačice sind.

Altmanns Werk war eng mit dem kirchlichen und städtischen Umfeld seiner Heimatregion verbunden, wo er als Maler und Bürger bedeutende Spuren hinterließ.

Jan Antonín Altmann was a painter from a prominent Dačice artistic family that had been involved in the decoration of local and Viennese buildings and interiors for several generations. His son, Jan Antonín Altmann II, also continued the painting tradition. In addition to his artistic work, Altmann Sr. also held various positions in the city council.

He is credited with the authorship of several important works, such as two paintings on the processional banner in the church of St. Lawrence in Dačice, a painting of St. Lawrence in the chapel of the same dedication in the village of Hříšice, and portraits of the Šantrůčeks from Dačice, which are now part of the collections of the Dačice Municipal Museum and Gallery.

Altmann's work was closely connected with the church and urban environment of his native region, where he left a significant mark as a painter and citizen.
